It’s a slightly ironic fact of life that the better you do, the more you are in demand. The more you achieve, the more your time is sought by others looking for some of that magic. And so, while we all want to get on in life and do more, it means we have less time. First, we don’t have time because we’re trying to be successful. Then, when we are successful, we still don’t have it. Many people are, relatively speaking, cash-rich and time-poor.
So it can be frustrating, and a little bit offensive, when we are then judged for our eating habits. Why are you grabbing a quick burger, when it would be healthier to eat grilled meat and vegetables? The answer? Because the burger is brought to me in my car, while the grilled meat needs to be cooked and means I see my kids for about an hour before bedtime. Okay, this is a hypothetical example, but it is one that people live every day.
Convenience is what wins when we find our time in short supply. It is a reason why we take the unhealthy option when we know we shouldn’t. But if we’re honest, it is also an excuse we sometimes make because we don’t feel we have time to cook. And also, because junk food can be so very tempting. It’s an excuse we need to avoid.
Snacking Is Fine, As Long As You’re Smart
Have you ever been on a diet and, for a treat, had a burger or some fried chicken? Did you then have another little treat afterwards? Be honest, did the wheels come off the whole diet for a while? This is because junk food is addictive. It spikes your blood sugar, and your body likes it and craves some more.
It’s okay to snack, but you need self-control. Unless it’s a special occasion, go for fruit or nuts instead of junk. The less junk you eat, the less you will crave it.
Don’t Think Of Healthy As Boring
It’s the biggest bump in the road of any diet – you know what you should be eating. You know why you should be eating it. And that “should” feels like an obligation. And obligations are really not fun. But eating healthily doesn’t mean plain apples and carrot sticks all the way. Some options, as seen at blog.paleohacks.com/6-paleo-snacks-fight-cravings/, can be downright appealing. And they’re hard to binge on, so it’s win-win.
Don’t Fall Into The “Easy” Trap
So many of the little slips we have during a diet come because chocolate and chips are easy. Work vending machines rarely have raspberries and granola in great quantities. It’s on you to make sure you don’t get caught with blood sugar at a low, and snack sugar the only option. Take a few bags of fruit – melon, berries, pineapple, none of the “boring” stuff – to work, and have that instead.
If it helps at all, there are few if any things that are downright forbidden, permanently, from a healthy diet. We just need to be realistic. Our time is in demand, sure. But we don’t have to give in to cravings for convenience’s sake.
