College 101: Staying Healthy as You Head Off to College
If you or someone you know is headed off to college this fall, then it will be a busy time. Packing up all that you need to take, as well as getting ready to study. For a lot of college students, this is the first time that they will have been away from home. So they tend to go a little wild as they don’t have parents checking in on them every day. The thing is, though, your health can suffer as a result. The worst part about getting sick when you are a student? The only person to take care of you is a roommate, if at all. So it is best to be avoided if you can. Here are a few things that you can do to stay healthy as you head off to college.
Having a varied and balanced diet is key to good health. Not only will it affect your weight, but it will affect how energised you feel and how your skin looks. Pizzas and burgers every so often are fine. But they shouldn’t become too regular of a thing. Make sure you have lots of fruits and veggies in your diet. Keep healthy snacks in too. It can be easy to reach for some candy when you are feeling tired. But they will only give you an artificial energy boost. Things like dried fruit, nuts and seeds are great foods for giving you a natural energy boost. They keep your blood sugar level even, which stops that slump of feeling even more tired. Along with eating right, drinking plenty of water is a great idea too. It flushes the toxins out of your body. It also helps your body to function and repair as it should.
Relax and Unwind
In stressful times like during exams, it is important to have a little downtime. Physical health is just as important to remember as mental health. Feeling stressed out can damage your health in many ways. It can lead to things like higher blood pressure, depression and even cause you to eat more. So taking time out to relax and unwind is a great idea. This might be something like meditation or yoga, or even just going for a walk or a run. Have something regularly in your schedule to unwind, though.
College is a time that people will be meeting a whole host of new people and developing new relationships. You do have to think, how well do you know these people? So as well as avoiding pregnancy, practising safe sex will keep you healthy. Getting an STD can affect your overall health in more ways than you would think. If you think that you might have an STD, then there is accurate STD testing that you can do discreetly. It is better to deal with this kind of thing as soon as you can.
