We all know the benefits of eating well; a good diet and healthy lifestyle can positively impact just about every aspect of our lives. But we’re of course not perfect; sometimes things can slip, or bad habits can form. When they do, our bodies can have subtle (and sometimes not so subtle!) ways of telling us that things aren’t right. So if you’re experiencing symptoms are brushing them off, it might be time to start listening to your body. Here are three common symptoms that can be aggravated by an unhealthy diet.
Acid Reflux and Indigestion
Most people will experience acid reflux and indigestion at one time of another. But if you find yourself reaching for heartburn relief medication far too often, your diet could be to blame. Cutting out fried and fatty foods from your diet can be helpful, and not eating portions that are too large. Overfilling your stomach puts strain on your esophageal sphincter. This can cause acid to leak back out, causing the painful burning feeling in your throat and chest. Choosing the right foods and eating smaller portions is likely to improve indigestion and heartburn. It’s important to prevent this, since over a few years the acid can irritate the lining of the esophagus and can even lead to cancer.
Acne and Skin Issues
Acne has a variety of causes, and if you are suffering from moderate to severe acne, it’s important to speak to your doctor. But one thing you can try is to address your diet. There are a number of ‘trigger foods’ known to cause acne flare-ups; these include dairy, sugar, soy, wheat, coffee and others. Avoiding these while sticking to a healthy diet of whole foods, plenty of fruit and vegetables and lean protein is good for your entire body. It can also help to clear up acne in some cases. There are a million reasons as to why you should avoid processed, fatty and sugary foods- reducing your acne is just one of them.
Bloating and Digestive Problems
A swollen and painful stomach is an indication that something you’re eating in your diet doesn’t agree with you. It can be frustrating when your clothes become uncomfortable and tight mid way through the day. You might even find you can’t wear things you want, to due to a visible swelling in the stomach. Bloating can be caused by conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerances, allergies and other things caused by your diet. Speaking to your doctor to get to the root cause is important. Other things you can try are making sure you’re not eating too much or too little fiber, both of which can contribute to bloating. Avoid any foods that you know you don’t get along with, and generally follow a healthy eating plan. Keeping a food diary and tracking your bloating can also help. Foods including dairy and wheat are often culprits when it comes to bloating and digestive issues.
