I made this homemade lamb dog food for Molly using simple ingredients and plenty of vegetables. The sweet potatoes help give it a thick, stew-like texture, and making a big batch means I can freeze smaller portions to have ready whenever I want to give her something special.

  • Simple ingredients: Tender lamb, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and vegetables come together in one pot.

About The Ingredients

  1. Lamb: Boneless leg of lamb adds protein and flavor. Trim away excess fat and cut it into small, bite-sized pieces.
  2. Brown Rice: Makes the mixture hearty and helps absorb the cooking liquid. Cook until completely tender.
  3. Sweet Potato: Adds fiber and gives the food a thicker, stew-like texture when mashed.
  4. Carrots: Add natural sweetness and soften nicely as everything cooks.
  5. Zucchini: A mild vegetable that blends right into the lamb and rice mixture.
  6. Peas: Frozen peas are easy to use and add a little extra fiber.
  7. Spinach: A small amount of chopped spinach adds variety and mixes easily into the finished food.
  8. Olive Oil: Used to brown the lamb and sauté the vegetables before simmering.

How to Make Homemade Lamb Dog Food

Brown the Lamb: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the lamb chunks and brown on all sides for 6–8 minutes. Remove the lamb and set aside.

Cook the Vegetables: Add the remaining olive oil to the pot. Stir in the sweet potato, carrots, and zucchini. Cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the Rice: Return the lamb to the pot. Pour in the water and stir in the uncooked brown rice.

Simmer: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the brown rice is fully cooked and the lamb is tender. Brown rice may need 40–50 minutes or longer, so add a little extra water if needed.

Add the Greens: Stir in the frozen peas and chopped spinach. Cover and cook for another 5–7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.

Thicken and Cool: Mash some of the sweet potatoes against the side of the pot to create a thicker, stew-like consistency. Remove from the heat and let cool complet

Tips I Found Helpful

  • Cut the lamb into small pieces. Trim excess fat and make the pieces easy for your dog to eat.
  • Cook the rice completely. Brown rice can take 40–50 minutes to soften. Add a little extra water if needed.
  • Keep it plain. Don’t add salt, onions, garlic, or other seasonings.
  • Adjust the texture. Mash some of the sweet potatoes for a thicker mixture, or add a little water if it’s too thick.
  • Cool before serving. Let the food cool completely before putting it in your dog’s bowl.
  • Freeze individual portions. Divide leftovers into small containers so they’re easy to thaw when needed.
