Tips & Tricks
- Choose the right pastry: Puff pastry is commonly used for ham and cheese pinwheels as it provides a light and flaky texture. Make sure to thaw the pastry according to the package instructions before using it.
- Use quality ingredients: Opt for high-quality ham and cheese to enhance the flavors of your pinwheels. Deli-sliced ham and Swiss cheese are popular choices, but feel free to experiment with different varieties.
- Add extra flavor: Consider adding additional ingredients like Dijon mustard, ranch seasoning, or caramelized onions to elevate the taste of your pinwheels. These flavors can complement the ham and cheese beautifully.
- Roll tightly: When assembling the pinwheels, make sure to roll the pastry tightly to prevent any gaps or unraveling during baking. This will help the pinwheels maintain their shape and keep the fillings intact.
- Chill before slicing: After rolling the pinwheels, it’s recommended to chill them in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes. This will firm up the pastry and make it easier to slice into neat rounds.
- Brush with egg wash: To achieve a golden-brown and glossy finish, brush the pinwheels with an egg wash before baking. This will give them an appetizing appearance.

These were so great! I ended up making a couple of modifications (mainly because I discovered my mustard was bad when prepping to make them). Instead of the mustard I did one half with Whataburger creamy pepper sauce and the other half with pesto. I also sprinkled shredded parmesan on top of the slices when they went into the air fryer. I have the Ninja double sided one and found that it needed just a min or two less than the circle air fryer.
These came out so flaky and delicious! Will absolutely be making them again asap! (Also approved by the 20 month old!!)
