Pizza night doesn’t have to mean ordering takeout. This simple cheese pizza comes together with just five ingredients, and using prepared pizza dough makes it especially easy when I want homemade pizza without making dough from scratch.

Why I Love Three Cheese Pizza

  • Three kinds of cheese: Mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan give you plenty of cheesy flavor.
  • Only five ingredients: There’s nothing complicated about this pizza.
  • Quick to make: It’s ready in about 30 minutes.
  • Store-bought dough works: You don’t have to make homemade dough unless you want to.
  • Easy to customize: It’s a great base for adding your favorite pizza toppings.

Ingredient Notes

  1. Pizza Dough: A 16-ounce ball of homemade or store-bought pizza dough works well. Let refrigerated dough sit at room temperature for a little while so it’s easier to stretch.
  2. Pizza Sauce: Use your favorite homemade or store-bought pizza sauce. Start with ½ cup and add more if needed, but avoid using too much or the crust can become soggy.
  3. Mozzarella Cheese: Low-moisture mozzarella melts beautifully without adding too much moisture to the pizza. I recommend shredding it yourself when possible.
  4. Provolone Cheese: Adds a slightly sharper flavor and extra creaminess to the cheese blend.
  5. Parmesan Cheese: Freshly shredded Parmesan adds a salty, nutty flavor that finishes the three-cheese combination.

How to Make Three Cheese Pizza

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using store-bought pizza dough, follow the package’s instructions for resting and rolling.
  2. Lightly grease a 16-inch pizza pan with oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Roll out your pizza dough to fit the pan, aiming for a diameter of approximately 14-16 inches. Carefully transfer the dough to the prepared pan.
  4. Spread ½ to ¾ cup of pizza sauce evenly over the dough using a spoon or ladle. Leave about ½ inch of space around the edges for the crust.
  5. Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce, followed by the provolone cheese. Finish with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top.
  6. Place the pizza pan on the center rack of your preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly with light browning.
  7. Remove the pizza from the oven using oven mittens and allow it to cool for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Slice into triangles or squares and serve. Enjoy!

Tips I Found Helpful

  • Bring the dough to room temperature: I let refrigerated pizza dough sit out before stretching it. Cold dough tends to spring back and is harder to shape.
  • Don’t overload the sauce: Start with about ½ cup and add more only if needed. Too much sauce can make the center of the pizza soggy.
  • Shred your own cheese: Freshly shredded mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan melt better than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Preheat the oven well: A fully heated oven helps the crust cook quickly and gives you a crispier bottom.
  • Stretch instead of rolling: I gently stretch the dough with my hands to help keep some air in the crust.
  • Leave a border around the edge: Keep about ½ inch of dough uncovered around the outside for a nice golden crust.
  • Let the pizza rest before slicing: Give it a few minutes after it comes out of the oven. This lets the cheese settle and makes the pizza easier to slice. 🍕💙

FAQs about Three Cheese Pizza

Absolutely! While mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan create a perfect blend, you can easily swap in other cheeses like fontina, gouda, Monterey Jack, or asiago for a fun twist on the classic.

No problem! You can use a large baking sheet instead. Just roll out your dough into an oval or rectangle to fit the pan — it’ll still bake up deliciously.

You can prepare the dough and shred the cheeses ahead of time, but it’s best to assemble and bake the pizza fresh for the best texture. If needed, you can assemble it a few hours in advance and keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready to bake.

Store any leftover pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Reheat slices in a 375°F oven or an air fryer for a few minutes to bring back that crispy crust and melty cheese!

Yes! You can freeze the baked pizza or even the unbaked assembled pizza. If freezing after baking, let the pizza cool completely, then wrap slices tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag. They’ll keep for up to 2 months. To reheat, bake straight from frozen at 375°F until heated through and crispy. If freezing before baking, assemble the pizza on a parchment-lined tray, freeze until solid, then wrap tightly. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
