Grilled Cabbage
I know you might be thinking it sounds strange to toss cabbage on the grill, but trust me it works. You get tender and flavorful cabbage, that you slice wedges out of. Serve with all your favorite main dishes!
You can dip your cabbage in a sauce or eat it with the bacon and that is it. Either way, this cabbage is tender, juicy, and loaded with tons of flavor.
If you love cabbage and Bacon and don’t want to use the grill you can also use my Southern Fried cabbage and bacon recipe.
How to Make Cabbage on your Grill
- Step 1: Remove Core of the cabbage head
- Step 2: Cut Slices diagonal and horizontal in your cabbage. Not do not go all the way through.
- Step 4: Wrap raw bacon around cabbage head.
- Step 5: Place in heavy duty foil
- Step 6: Add Salt and Pepper to cabbage and Pour beer over cabbage.
- Step 7: Cover tightly and cook on grill or campfire
What Color Of Cabbage To Use
For this recipe I use green cabbage. While purple might work I just find that green is my go-to when cooking it. I find that red cabbage is best when you eat it fresh and chilled.
Do I Need A Particular Bacon
One thing to know is if you reach for a super-thin style bacon it will cook up really fast. That can leave your cabbage a little undercooked and your bacon overcooked.
I reached for a thick slice of bacon and I removed the foil for the last half hour of cooking to make sure the bacon was all crispy.
How to Keep Bacon on Cabbage
I did not need any toothpicks. The foil did help keep my bacon in place but you can use toothpicks to secure the bacon onto the cabbage. Just as you are applying the raw bacon make sure to toothpick it here and there. If you are worried about your toothpicks burning up from the high heat, use this trick.
Soal the toothpicks for around 5 minutes before you stick into the bacon and cabbage. It will help the wood maintain the liquid so it won’t burn up as it is placed on a hot grill.
Can I Make This Cabbage on An Indoor Grill
Of course! If you don’t have an outdoor grill you can make it indoors. Just use an indoor the same in terms of cooking. Make sure you rotate and get all the bacon cooked.
In terms of the cabbage, just cook until it meets your desired texture as well.
How To Store Leftovers
This cabbage side dish is best when served fresh and warm. It will begin to become softer as it sits in the fridge once it has some time to cool down from cooking.
While it still tastes good, the texture will be different. If you have leftovers you can warm up in the microwave or even the oven or toss back on the grill to reheat.
