No Canned Soup Instant Pot Green Bean Casserole
I would consider myself a foodie, I love to try new recipes, incorporate new ingredients, and see what happens. I chose not to use canned cream soups for this because I wanted a more wholesome flavor. Sometimes you can get that processed taste from canned soups, and I wanted this to be really light and fresh, and that is exactly what I got. Also, I used frozen green beans for this recipe, and I found that they held their shape really well, instead of turning mushy like canned green beans tend to do. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this dish!
Green bean casserole is a dish that pretty much all households serve up around the holidays. Did you know that over 30 million households in the country serve green bean casserole during the holidays? Whether it is homemade or made from a can, it is one popular dish. While we all might have some unique side dishes and salads, we all can agree green bean casserole is a must for the holidays. How to Make Green Bean Casserole Without Canned Soup
You can make green bean casserole without canned soup. This recipe uses broth and heavy cream to give you that rich flavor. Plus the other seasonings and ingredients will season your casserole in a fantastic way. Trust me, you will never want green bean casserole in any other way.
Frozen Or Fresh Green Beans
When you cook in the Instant Pot it is best to use frozen vegetables. If you were to use canned green beans you will run into the beans becoming way too mushy. So reach for frozen if you can.
What If I Don’t Want To Use French’s Onions
If you don’t want the traditional topping to a green bean casserole I have another option. Thinly slice red onions and pair with panko bread crumbs that you saute for a few minutes to crunch it up. Then mix in salt, pepper, and then parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this all over your green bean casserole.
How To Make Green Bean Casserole Vegetarian
Simply use a vegetable broth in replace of the chicken broth so that you are not using any meat product in the casserole. This recipe is incredible and either route you are welcome to a broth to fit needs. It won’t adjust the flavor by that much swapping out the broth.
Variations to Green Bean Casserole
- Cheese | Add a sprinkle of cheese to add a fun cheesy aspect. Some love a cheesy casserole. You could do something like mozzarella or even cheddar. Both would be great options.
- Spice | This is a great way to add spice to your dish with a splash of hot sauce. You can mix the hot sauce in or sprinkle it on the cooked casserole.
- Topping | Of course, I gave you an option above to add a different topping if you didn’t want the classic French onions.

How many servings does this make? I’m cooking for 16 and want to make sure I have enough. Thanks
Excited to try this.
For that many I would double up. this did make a full pot though 🙂
Do I need to double all ingredients or just the green beans?
Thank you for not using canned soups. This way i can use this recipe in Germany too. – We dont have those canned soups used in so many recipes.
I make my own “cream of” soups! It’s basically chicken broth, milk and a bit of flour! Google for an easy recipe and it keeps in mason jars in fridge and freezer! Never have to buy it again! And it’s healthier!
This recipe calls for corn starch which is not in the listed ingredients.
Does this have to be served right away or can I pop it in the oven and warm it a couple hours later?
