Mexican Shrimp Cocktail
Lately I have been loving all kinds of shrimp dishes like my new favorite spicy shrimp dip, Air Fryer Bang Bang Shrimp, and of course this delicious Mexican Shrimp Cocktail.
You will love this dish for so many reasons!
- The flavor is out of this world.
- Requires no cooking, especially when you use already cooked shrimp.
- Easy to make. This dish comes together in less than 20 minutes and honestly the hardest part is waiting for it to chill in the fridge so you can enjoy it!
What is the difference between Mexican Shrimp Cocktail and Ceviche?
The major difference between Mexican Shrimp Cocktail and Ceviche is the ingredients. Ceviche has fresh raw fish mixed with spices and vegetables where this is only cooked shrimp.

What Ingredients do I need to get started?
- Jumbo Shrimp – I prefer to buy frozen pre cooked shrimp and thaw
- Red onion – any onion is fine.
- Jalapeno – you can use a serrano if you like
- Garlic
- Salt and pepper
- Tomato – I like to use Roma tomatoes for this, but any is fine
- English cucumber – you can use any you want, just remove the seeds if you are using a different cucumber
- Avocado – get a ripe firm avocado. Always add this last so it doesn’t get stirred too much and get mushy
- Cilantro – extra delicious, but can be omitted
- Ketchup – any brand
- Clam juice – this adds lots of flavor. This can be found near the canned shrimp and tuna.
- Mexican hot sauce – Valentina or Tapatio
- Lime juice – fresh squeezed is best
- Worcestershire sauce – for flavor
- Clamato juice – spicy or regular
- Olive oil
- Lime wedges for serving
- Crackers or chips
How to Make Mexican Spicy Shrimp Cocktail
- In a large bowl, combine everything but the avocado. Stir well to combine.
- Add the avocados and gently stir.
- Serve with crackers and lime wedges.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- Rinse the diced onion under cold water to take a bit of the heat out.
- Leave a few tails on the shrimp for an added touch when serving.
- This is better if allowed to refrigerate for an hour before serving.
- While I usually buy cooked frozen shrimp you can absolutely buy raw shrimp and cook them yoursef.
- Don’t forget to remove the intestine before making this dish. This is the gray vein that you will find on the back of the shrimp.
- I find that medium size shrimp work best for this dish.
Storage
Ideally you will want to enjoy this the same day you make it for the best flavor.
You can store this in the fridge for up to a day, but the avocado will begin to brown and the flavors won’t taste as great as they did the day before.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! You can make this ahead of time. I highly recommend making the sauce, everything except the shrimp and avocado, and letting it sit in the fridge for about 2 hours prior to serving. This will help all the flavors come together nicely. Right before serving you will want to add the avocado and the shrimp.
You can make this up to 6 hours ahead of time.
How do you serve Mexican Shrimp Cocktail?
Normally you will serve this in a large bowl or in individual cocktail glasses. Typically you will serve crackers or tortilla chips for dipping.
