As soon as summer hits, I start searching the store for Watermelon. It is literally one of my favorite things in the world and you can pretty much find it in our house all summer long.
We are constantly creating some of the most delicious meals with it like our watermelon and mint salad and our grilled watermelon salad. Recently I have begun making my own homemade barbecue sauce and it is incredible let me tell you! It was only natural to want to test out a homemade watermelon BBQ Sauce Recipe!

Why this recipe works:
This recipe works because the watermelon and brown sugar are fresh and sweet and balance the balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and mustard so well.
What do I need to get started?
- Watermelon – Seedless! Just blend about 2 ½ cups of watermelon. No need to strain.
- Balsamic vinegar – you can use all apple cider vinegar if you want. Won’t be quite the same, but still good.
- Apple cider vinegar – using a couple of different vinegars gives this an especially great flavor
- Brown sugar – you can use honey if you want
- Soy sauce
- Olive oil
- Garlic
- Dijon mustard – or regular
- Saucepan
How to make Watermelon BBQ sauce
- Pour all ingredients in a medium saucepan and place over medium heat.
- Cook until reduced to about half or thickened, stirring occasionally. This will take about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Pour into a small bowl
- Brush over meat before and after grilling.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- To spice this up a bit you can add a little bit of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
- You can easily double or even triple the amount of sauce you make at once.
- Be patient when cooking down the sauce. It will take awhile, but just keep it on medium heat and let it work its magic.

If you have leftover sauce you can store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

- 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons soy sauce

- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
