Tips & Tricks

  • Choose the Right Cut: Opt for a tender cut of beef such as sirloin, chuck, or round steak for best results. These cuts are flavorful and become tender when cooked under pressure.
  • Sear the Meat: Before pressure cooking, consider searing the beef tips in the Instant Pot on the sauté setting. Searing helps to lock in flavor and adds depth to the dish.
  • Use Collapsible Steamer: Placing a collapsible steamer basket on top of the beef and gravy mixture helps to cook the potatoes separately while infusing them with flavor from the steam.
  • Adjust Cooking Time: Depending on the size and thickness of your beef tips, you may need to adjust the cooking time. If using larger pieces of meat, consider increasing the pressure cooking time by a few minutes to ensure they become tender.
  • Quick Release for Potatoes: When the pressure cooking cycle is complete, perform a quick release to prevent the potatoes from becoming mushy. This helps to retain their texture and flavor.
  • Thicken the Gravy: If the gravy is too thin after pressure cooking, you can thicken it by making a slurry with cornstarch and beef broth. Add the slurry to the Instant Pot and simmer on the sauté setting until the gravy reaches your desired consistency.
  • Season to Taste: Taste the gravy before serving and adjust the seasoning as needed. You can add salt, pepper, or additional herbs and spices to enhance the flavor to your liking.
  • Mash Potatoes with Butter and Milk: For creamy mashed potatoes, mash them with butter and milk after cooking. This adds richness and creaminess to the potatoes, making them the perfect accompaniment to the beef tips and gravy.
  • Use Gravy Master for Depth: Gravy Master is a seasoning sauce that adds richness and depth to gravies. Adding a splash of Gravy Master to the gravy enhances its flavor and gives it a beautiful color.
  • Garnish for Presentation: Before serving, consider garnishing the beef tips and gravy with chopped fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and freshness.

  1. I have made this recipe a couple times before and loved it. I came back to it to make dinner tonight and the recipe won’t load. All it has is the title and cook times. I tried to look it up on my kindle, iPhone and laptop.
Help please! Is there a problem with this page? Thank you!

  2. I want to use 2 or 3 lb of beef cubes. Must I double or triple the liquid? I probably won’t double the mushrooms, but will be using at least six potatoes instead of four.

  3. clarification on the freezer meals…do you leave the food in the bag and then put the frozen bag into the Instant Pot ?

  4. I’ll be making this for the second time tonight. The first time was pure comfort food and was absolutely delicious! I skipped the red wine because I didn’t have any in the house. The beef was fork tender and I loved the easy clean up from using the instant pot for both the beef and potatoes. This will be a regular on our dinner rotation!

  5. Love this recipe! Random question but if I am going to make it without the potatoes, would the cook time change at all? And how about if I double the recipe (minus the potatoes)? Thanks so much!
